PURE HEARTS, STRONG FOUNDATIONS: MORAL (SPIRITUAL) PURITY IS GAIN

In this season of Lent and reflection, we shall attempt to ponder on the scary topic of “Moral and Spiritual purity”. More often, we talk about love, when we mean romantic (Ero) not unconditional love (Agape). Surprisingly no true love exists and is esteemed without moral and spiritual purity. “Purity may refer to freedom from contamination or compromise. In a biblical context, it refers to the state of being free from sin, moral corruption, and defilement. It encompasses both physical and spiritual cleanliness, meaning that it involves not only external purity but also internal purity of heart. Purity is often associated with holiness, righteousness, and sanctification, and it is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, emphasizing the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God.” God is inherently pure and holy. His actions are consistently good and cannot tolerate impurity, as highlighted in Habakkuk 1:13 and Psalm 12:6.

On the other hand, lack of respect for moral and spiritual purity has caused many to remain single (unmarried), living lonely together and often entangled with divorce. In this era of prosperity manipulation, most preachers hardly preach on the topic of purity. It’s not what the people want to hear, it makes the congregants uncomfortable with a feeling of chastisement and judgment. More so, the preacher could feel sense of guilt. Unknown to many the word “purity” is embedded in every religion especially Christian faith. Purity is a critical aspect of a Christian life It encompasses both the inner condition of the heart and the outward actions that reflect a life aligned with God’s standards. Little wonder, Jesus declared that those who are pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8). Purity allows us to experience God’s presence, hear His voice, and enjoy fellowship with Him. It brings a sense of peace and fulfillment that is not possible when our hearts are burdened by sin.

We live in a wicked world, and its environment is very toxic. There may be hunched ways to say it differently, but the fact is very glaring and undeniable Our magazines and newspapers, even in social media, are saturated with evil reports and news. There’re so visible and real that we seem to wonder about the truth but that doesn’t take them away. The evils in the world are daily occurrence and many who are spiritual ignorant get caught up with snares and webs. When God created Eden, the paradise home of Adam and Eve, there was another crafty being present/found in the garden, the serpent/Satan. The Bible describes it as deceitful, cunny and father of all lies as well as the author of evil in the world. The bible portrays it as responsible for the fall of Eve and Adam, that has affected the whole humanity (Isaiah 14:). Among other books, the book of Proverbs warns Christians especially young people against the consequences of moral and spiritual/sexual impurity. Proverbs 7:24-27; Proverbs 22:11; 2 Corinthians 6:6; 1 Timothy 5;2.

It can be achieved through meditation, prayers and self-reflection and discipline; may require avoiding negative influences and toxic relationship. Some biblical strong men were brought down by not acceding to the cautions of sexual purity. Names like: King David, Judah, Sampson and so on are for easy mention. These doesn’t only affect men in scriptures but also more rampant with men in free world. In creating mankind, God made and commanded that we live our lives in purity even in the wicked world. Living in purity demands obedience and honoring God with our bodies. Many struggles and battles for purity occur in the mind. Moral purity has something to do with the ways a man /woman think and behaves towards opposite sex. Chastity is another word for purity

David G. Burkholder on Young Man, be strong writes, “Notice that the way you handle your physical instincts affects your life now and not just later. Moral impurity brings a troubled conscience. On the other hand, living a pure, victorious life in which you are the master of your body brings peace and sense of God’s blessings on you. Purity will keep you from being destroyed. As you look around, you would see that immorality has the power to being keeps the sky clear between you and God. it is far more satisfying than flair impurity could ever bring down and destroy. Look at all the broken homes? Think of the social diseases spreading by way of immorality. “Don’t forget unwanted pregnancies resulting from illicit sexual intercourse.” But worst of all, when a man deliberately commits moral sin, he tarnishes and loses his relationship with God. His spiritual life dies long before his home crumbles or his body gets sick. You see, the threat is not only out there in the world. Satan also tries to destroy the most earnest Christians. Moral conviction can weaken from the inside if we don’t guard it carefully. The process works a little like termites in the foundation of a building. The building doesn’t collapse immediately but if the termites are not checked and stopped, sooner or later it will.

That recalls, another word temptation. Every day in every situation in different ways, Satan tempts us. Temptation itself is no sin but yielding to it, is. Sometimes temptation comes to us very swiftly, in unbelievable manner, in totally unexpected, envisage way. What we do with temptation determines our love to God or love for Satan. Our carnal nature lusts towards evil. Little surprised the bible ask, “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his cloths are not burned? The answer is No! emphatically hell no!! Some newly converts believe that when they get born again, their bodies are no longer subjected sin nature. But this is not true. Our adamic nature was not converted, so remain subjected to sin. As we grow into manhood, our bodies start getting natured, our reproductive organs begin to function long before the young man is man enough to handle parenthood. This brings a long drive before we intend to get married. Unknown to many young people, God had provided a way for the productive glands to find release from time to time. During sleep, the reproductive glands release their secretion from the body without any human assistance. As against the internet hypothesis, lack of constant sexual intercourse could result in prostate illness.

Burkholder further illuminates, “What you think affects your body, and your mind can stimulate your physical desires. Once our body is stimulated it in turn stimulates the mind to think more wrong thoughts, creating a vicious cycle. God wants to deliver you from wrong thoughts the moment there come to mind. However, Prov 9:17-18.says, “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead”. Sex perversion seems to be spreading widely while homosexuality is receiving unholy acceptance, such that what was sin is now decorated as disease. We know that God has given us power to live a pure life and Satan standing to make us fall. However Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 10;13, reassures, “No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

When God lives in your heart, He gives you power to live in purity. However, our responsibility is to surrender our carnal will and desire to please Him. Victory is a constant battle and daily struggle. You never conquer them once and for all. But as you persevere and persist in living right, God’s Spirit help your weaknesses and guarantees victory. It’s also pertinent to settle the heart matter: Who owns your body? And how does He want you to live. 1Corinthians 6:13 says, “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” The principle in this passage entails: i). Do not sin against your body; ii) If you keep your body sinless for the Lord, He gives you power for victory. In case you fail, never give up. 1 John1:8-9 instructs, confess your sin and repent; God is faithful and just and will forgive and reinstate you. Never allow Satan to deceive you that there is no forgiveness but clinging to God and in faith His grace is sufficient for you.

Guard your mind closely Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” The mind is the central place of different thoughts -either to entertain or refuse temptation. Keep having the right goals, staying strong and abiding in God. Learn to say no to evil thoughts and never entertain it less you will fight what you allow. Also learn to say no to people who will lure and tempt you to sin with them. Whatever it takes to stay pure, do it. Your behavior will suggest and determine your interest and where your mind is leaning on. On the other hand, keep your mind busy with good things. “Idleness is the devils’ workshop.” Memorizing the scripture also help to filling and occupy the mind and resist evil more effectively. Read and memorize your bible and some good Christian positive minded book until you are sleepy. Never get close to places you have no business being. Do not also follow people to places you have no business being at. Decease from fantasizing with wrong thoughts. Avoid friends who weaken your faith and make it harder to live a pure life. Such friends are unfriendly friends or better put enemies. Always get into habit of mortifying the flesh and crucifying the old man (Rom 5:5; Gal 2:20).
