In this season of Lent and reflection, we shall attempt to ponder on the scary topic of “Moral and Spiritual purity”. More often, we talk about love, when we mean romantic (Ero) not unconditional love (Agape). Surprisingly no true love exists and is esteemed without moral and spiritual purity. “Purity may refer to freedom from contamination or compromise. In a biblical context, it refers to the state of being free from sin, moral corruption, and defilement. It encompasses both physical and spiritual cleanliness, meaning that it involves not only external purity but also internal purity of heart. Purity is often associated with holiness, righteousness, and sanctification, and it is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, emphasizing the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God.” God is inherently pure and holy. His actions are consistently good and cannot tolerate impurity, as highlighted in Habakkuk 1:13 and Psalm 12:6.
On the other hand, lack of respect for moral and spiritual purity has caused many to remain single (unmarried), living lonely together and often entangled with divorce. In this era of prosperity manipulation, most preachers hardly preach on the topic of purity. It’s not what the people want to hear, it makes the congregants uncomfortable with a feeling of chastisement and judgment. More so, the preacher could feel sense of guilt. Unknown to many the word “purity” is embedded in every religion especially Christian faith. Purity is a critical aspect of a Christian life It encompasses both the inner condition of the heart and the outward actions that reflect a life aligned with God’s standards. Little wonder, Jesus declared that those who are pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8). Purity allows us to experience God’s presence, hear His voice, and enjoy fellowship with Him. It brings a sense of peace and fulfillment that is not possible when our hearts are burdened by sin.
We live in a wicked world, and its environment is very toxic. There may be hunched ways to say it differently, but the fact is very glaring and undeniable Our magazines and newspapers, even in social media, are saturated with evil reports and news. There’re so visible and real that we seem to wonder about the truth but that doesn’t take them away. The evils in the world are daily occurrence and many who are spiritual ignorant get caught up with snares and webs. When God created Eden, the paradise home of Adam and Eve, there was another crafty being present/found in the garden, the serpent/Satan. The Bible describes it as deceitful, cunny and father of all lies as well as the author of evil in the world. The bible portrays it as responsible for the fall of Eve and Adam, that has affected the whole humanity (Isaiah 14:). Among other books, the book of Proverbs warns Christians especially young people against the consequences of moral and spiritual/sexual impurity. Proverbs 7:24-27; Proverbs 22:11; 2 Corinthians 6:6; 1 Timothy 5;2.
Bibledictionarytoday.com defines, “Purity in the Bible as a state of being free from sin, moral corruption, or any form of contamination. It signifies holiness and sanctity—qualities that reflect the nature of God. The word “Purity” holds significant weight and transcends mere cleanliness or moral integrity state that God desires for all His followers. It also extends to moral and ethical behavior. In Matthew 5:8, Jesus states, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” This verse illustrates that purity is not just an external condition but a matter of heart and spirit. Spiritual purity refers to a state of being free from moral or spiritual impurities. It often involves the practice of virtues such as compassion, honesty, and humility. Many traditions emphasize the importance of inner peace and clarity of mind. Topical Encyclopedia describes “Spiritual purity” as the state of being free from sin and moral corruption, aligning one’s heart, minds and actions with the holiness of God (1 Thess 4:3-4). It can be achieved through meditation, prayers and self-reflection and discipline; may require avoiding negative influences and toxic relationship. Some biblical strong men were brought down by not acceding to the cautions of sexual purity. Names like: King David, Judah, Sampson and so on are for easy mention. These doesn’t only affect men in scriptures but also more rampant with men in free world. In creating mankind, God made and commanded that we live our lives in purity even in the wicked world. Living in purity demands obedience and honoring God with our bodies. Many struggles and battles for purity occur in the mind. Moral purity has something to do with the ways a man /woman think and behaves towards opposite sex. Chastity is another word for purity
That recalls, another word temptation. Every day in every situation in different ways, Satan tempts us. Temptation itself is no sin but yielding to it, is. Sometimes temptation comes to us very swiftly, in unbelievable manner, in totally unexpected, envisage way. What we do with temptation determines our love to God or love for Satan. Our carnal nature lusts towards evil. Little surprised the bible ask, “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his cloths are not burned? The answer is No! emphatically hell no!! Some newly converts believe that when they get born again, their bodies are no longer subjected sin nature. But this is not true. Our adamic nature was not converted, so remain subjected to sin. As we grow into manhood, our bodies start getting natured, our reproductive organs begin to function long before the young man is man enough to handle parenthood. This brings a long drive before we intend to get married. Unknown to many young people, God had provided a way for the productive glands to find release from time to time. During sleep, the reproductive glands release their secretion from the body without any human assistance. As against the internet hypothesis, lack of constant sexual intercourse could result in prostate illness.
When God lives in your heart, He gives you power to live in purity. However, our responsibility is to surrender our carnal will and desire to please Him. Victory is a constant battle and daily struggle. You never conquer them once and for all. But as you persevere and persist in living right, God’s Spirit help your weaknesses and guarantees victory. It’s also pertinent to settle the heart matter: Who owns your body? And how does He want you to live. 1Corinthians 6:13 says, “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” The principle in this passage entails: i). Do not sin against your body; ii) If you keep your body sinless for the Lord, He gives you power for victory. In case you fail, never give up. 1 John1:8-9 instructs, confess your sin and repent; God is faithful and just and will forgive and reinstate you. Never allow Satan to deceive you that there is no forgiveness but clinging to God and in faith His grace is sufficient for you.

Spiritual Relevance of Purity:
The meaning of the word purity in the Bible extends beyond mere avoidance of sin; it is a holistic approach to living a life that reflects God’s character. Purity affects our relationships, thoughts, and actions. When we strive for purity, we cultivate an environment where the Holy Spirit can work within us, leading to spiritual growth and maturity.
Biblical Foundation (Topical Encyclopedia on Spiritual Purity)
The concept of spiritual purity is deeply rooted in Scripture. In the Old Testament, purity laws were given to the Israelites to set them apart as God’s holy people. Leviticus 11:44-45 states, “For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy.” This call to holiness underscores the importance of purity in the life of a believer.
In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes the internal aspect of purity. In Matthew 5:8 , He declares, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” This beatitude highlights that true purity begins in the heart, affecting one’s thoughts, intentions, and actions. The Apostle Paul also addresses purity in his epistles. In 1 Timothy 4:12 , he exhorts Timothy, “Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” Here, purity is presented as a vital aspect of Christian conduct and witness.
Purity and the Heart
The heart is central to the biblical understanding of spiritual purity. Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.” The heart is the wellspring of one’s spiritual life, and maintaining its purity is crucial for a genuine relationship with God. Jesus further teaches that defilement comes from within, not from external sources. In Mark 7:20-23 , He explains, “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him. For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. All these evils come from within, and these are what defile a man.”
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in achieving and maintaining spiritual purity. Believers are called to live by the Spirit, who empower them to overcome the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 instructs, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The Spirit works within believers to produce the fruit of righteousness, leading them toward a life of purity.
Purity and the Christian Life: (Topical Encyclopedia on Understanding Purity).
For Christians, purity is both a gift and a calling. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, believers are cleansed from sin and made pure before God. Hebrews 9:14 states, “How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God!” However, Christians are also called to pursue purity actively. This involves a conscious effort to avoid sin and to cultivate holiness. 1 John 3:3 encourages believers, “And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” The pursuit of purity is a lifelong journey that requires reliance on the Holy Spirit and adherence to God’s Word.
Practical Aspects of Purity:
Purity manifests in various aspects of life, including thoughts, words, and actions. Philippians 4:8 provides guidance on maintaining purity of thought: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things. “In relationships, purity is essential for honoring God and others. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 instructs, “For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor.”
Challenges to Purity:
Believers face numerous challenges in maintaining purity, including cultural influences, personal temptations, and spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:11-12 reminds Christians to “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Closing Thoughts:
The term purity is often used today in relation to sexuality. Sexual purity is freedom from immorality or perversion. Girls sometimes wear purity rings to indicate their commitment to saving sex for marriage. Purity is closely related to holiness, and those who walk in holiness will keep themselves sexually pure: abstinent before marriage and monogamous within marriage. When we have been born again through faith in Jesus (John 3:3), we desire to live in purity (1 Peter 1:15–16). That purity is not limited to our sexuality, although that is important (Ephesians 5:2; 1 Corinthians 6:18). God desires that we live purely in all our dealings with others (Ezekiel 45:10; Luke 6:31). Purity should define our thought life (2 Corinthians 10:5), our words (Ephesians 4:29), and our actions (1 Corinthians 10:31). Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). When our hearts are clouded with impurities, we cannot experience God’s presence or hear His voice. But when our claim to righteousness is based on what Jesus has done (Titus 3:5), we will strive to forsake sin (1 John 3:9) and live in purity of heart, enjoying fellowship with the God of purity.
While purity is a high calling, it is attainable through the grace of God and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. By seeking God’s presence, studying His Word, and engaging in prayer, believers can grow in purity and reflect the holiness of their Creator. Jesus declared that those who are pure in heart will see God. Purity allows us to experience God’s presence, hear His voice, and enjoy fellowship with Him. It brings joy, freedom, and a sense of purpose in our lives. Purity is an essential aspect of a Christian life. By relying on Christ’s sacrifice and striving to live in purity, we can experience the fullness of God’s presence and blessings. Purity is not about legalism or external appearances but about a genuine desire to align our lives with God’s will and to live in a way that honors Him.
