DISCIPLESHIP DIGEST SEPTEMBER, 2012 EDITION
September is the beginning of the EMBER the last quarter months of the year. The name September comes from Latin word Septum which means seven and Septimus, meaning seventh. In Roman calendar it was the seventh month and had 29 days and 31 days. In Gregorian calendar, September is the ninth month of the year. The Gregorian calendar is the most used nowadays. It was named after Pope Gregory XIII who introduced it in 1582. Theres a leap year every four years and its one of the four months with 30 days. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the ninth month of the year.
September brings to mind the Labor Day celebration. Its the only legal holiday for the month, observed yearly on the first Monday in September. Another unpopular event is the Grandparents Day observed in the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Also September holds childhood Cancer Awareness month and Infant Mortality Awareness month as well as Prostate Awareness month, etc. Do not forget that September 13 is Uncle Sam Day. Also the School year starts in September after summer holidays and students return to schools.
Many significant historical events happened during the ninth month of the year but we shall mention but a few: On September 2, 1789, the United States Department of Treasury was established. On September 6, 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated while attending the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition in New York. We cannot forget the September 11, 2001 when terrorists attacked United States and destroying the twin towers at New York City and about 3000 people died in the massacre. Constitution Day and Citizen Day is marked on September 17. That was the day (Sept 17, 1787) the Constitution of US was signed. On the September 18, 1793 Washington laid the cornerstone of the Capital.
September is also regarded as the harvest time for crops; Switzerland calls September the Harvest month. The Anglo-Saxons called it Gerst monath (Barley month) because at this time of the year, they harvested barley used in brewing their favorite drink Barley brew. Its then my prayer that you will not sow and let another harvest. As you sow into areas of need, you will harvest 100 fold just like Isaac. God will bless the works of your hands and grant you favor in this ember months.
